Mental Health while Dealing with Bereavement During a Pandemic.

Proposition; what am I trying to say

My proposition for the editorial illustration is to bring awareness to a person's mental health while dealing with bereavement during a Pandemic. My illustrations are a way to make the subject of 'Loss', for young people especially, less taboo and making more people aware that it's okay to feel sadness while still celebrating the impact that loved one had on your life.

Statistics surrounding child/teenager bereavement

  • 1 in 29 5-16 year olds has been bereaved of a parent or sibling - that's a child in every average class.
  • A parent of children under 18 dies every 22 minutes in the UK; around 23,600 a year. This equates to around 111 children being bereaved of a parent every day.
  • 6% of British adults believe it’s never appropriate to talk to children of any age about death.

  • Nearly half (48%) of British adults agree that topics on death and dying should be taught as part of the compulsory primary school syllabus.

  • More than 1 in 5 (21%) British adults know someone who was bereaved of a parent or sibling as a child. 7% were bereaved themselves.

Visual Research

Unknown artist
I really love how this Unknown illustrator has depicted the idea of loss. The use of shadow is extremely clever as you can see both her's and the person she misses. I also appreciate the facial expression, its not too exaggerated, however, you can tell exactly how the girl is feeling in that particular moment.

Spirit Hold- Holly Warburton

I love the energy in this illustration being it really expresses her emotions and how frantic she must be feeling. I thought this was a lovely illustration to take inspiration from mainly because of how unrealistic it looks. Because the artist has made the drawing looked blurred you as the audience also feels a sense of uncertainty. Just as uncertain as how this girls feels talking to her loved one.

This illustration is also really effective, It shows how much this person misses the deceased and needs to be comforted. What is most interesting about this piece it how the illustrator has made a human shaped whole to represent the missing person. This has definitely helped with my inspiration and love the use of negative space.
