Illustration and Communication

  Here are some initial ideas for my spot Illustrations. In the top left illustration I wanted to show the boy alone on Christmas and missing his dad. However, I didn't want my spot illustrations to be sad, I wanted them to encourage my audience that it can get better, The top right and bottom right are both the same illustration but on the bottom right one I made it look more like a peach bubble. I'm not sure what I think of this drawing as it could be improved by colour but I don't think its getting the point across that he's telling stories of his loved one who has passed. The last illustration is of the boy trying out new hobbies such as gardening. I wanted to show that by having a hobby its a way to have personal growth and it will help with mental health too.  1. I added more detail to this drawing by make the rubber on the end of the pencil rounded and adding a bit more shading. I also changed the mans foot on the left to make it more realistic and I added a bit more shading to the sofa they are sitting on.  I also added more detail to the backpack. By adding more detail I think it makes it look more realistic and if its a lot heavier. I added a few details on the boy too.  I mocked up a two page spread for my magazine. On one side I drew the boy dragging the bag across the page and the other side will be 3 spot illustrations. However, I am unsure what to put in those boxes. In the top left on the right page is a spot illustration of the boy sharing stories about his dad. I wanted the page on the right to be positive ways to cope with bereavement.   

My first one is to represent the idea of when time passes your memories of the person you lost start fading away. I thought I could link it to how a tree sheds it leaves showing that because this boy is young his memory of the person he lost will get foggier and foggier. To link it to school I made him dressed in his uniform and backpack either walking to or from school. Overall, this isn't my favourite of the 3 visuals, however its an interesting concept.  This is my second visual for a zine cover, inspired by the idea of emotional baggage while dealing with the stress of school work and exams. I exaggerated the size of the bag, left a zip open- to show emptiness, the feeling of a massive weight on your shoulders and feeling emotionless about anything other than the bereavement you are going through.   Here are some of the designs inspired by my mind map. Based mainly around bereavement. However, I made a character who is in high school dealing with the loss of a loved one. I made thumbnails of things that I have researched are good to do while missing them eg; writing letters, doing activities that remind you of them, listening to their music and talking to them. My two favourite illustrations would be "feeling like they're around" and "missing them". "Feeling like they're around" is inspired by when I used to walk home from university I'd listen to music and felt like my dad was around, it was an easy way to feel at ease. "Missing them" is inspired by an experience my mum has; when she watches telly she imagine my dad in the seat he used to sit and similar to me, it was like having company.
